Effective
Communicator
First Placement Evidence
Description and Rationale:
The
evidence I have chosen from my
first placement to show my strength as an Effective Communicator is the
letter that I sent home to the parents/guardians introducing myself as
their student's student teacher. Also, I am using my letter for
parental consent for photos as part of the evidence. These two letters
show my ability to communicate effectively with others in a
professional way.
Reflection:
As
I read back over these letters, I
realize that my ability to effectively communicate has improved even
more since the beginning of the semester. These letters make me
understand the importance of communicating with parents,
administrators, colleagues, and others in a way that is positive and is
effective to the needs of the students. Through effectively
communicating the opportunities that I can and will provide students
will be greatly heightened and will be more positive. It is my goal to
be a top-notch Effective Communicator.
Second Placement Evidence
Description and Rationale:
The
evidence I have chosen to show that I meet the Effective Communicator
competency is a lesson I taught in Writing Workshop to the
Kindergarteners. I taught a short mini lesson on effectively
communicating through writing friendly letters. I modeled a friendly
letter for the students and we talked about all of the different parts
of the friendly letter. After this discussion and modeling, I explained
to stduents that we would be writing thank you notes to a lady, Mrs.
Whitt, who had come to show the students how to weave after we had read
Rumplestiltskin
during
our fairy tale unit. The students then completed the thank you letters
to Mrs. Whitt. Before writing the letters, I talked to the students
baout the importance of showing appreciation and letting people know
when you are thankful for something that they have done. So, in a sense
this was a cross-curricular connection with character education. This
lesson was designed to help student learn to effectively communicate
and my modeling of effective communiation was evidence that I have
grown as an Effective Communicator.
Reflection:
When I think about this lesson, I
realize how such a simple lesson can teach such an important lesson to
students. It is important for teachers to remember that even the little
things that happen in the classroom matter. The way we talk to and
treat others is a model for the way that our students will learn to
communicate. This is why it is important to understand the components
of what makes someone an Effective Communicator. I feel as though I
have learned these components duringmy student teaching, and I know
that I will continue to learn more about Effective Communication.
