Student
Enabler
First Placement Evidence
Description and Rationale:
The
evidence I have chosen to convey myself as a Student Enabler is
from a "Book Buddy" activity I planned for Mrs. Lee's class to work
with a Kindergarten class. Each week Mrs. Lee's class went to a
Kindergarten class and had "Book Buddy" time and participated in
activities as mentors with the Kindergarteners. This particular
activity was for Martin Luther King Day. First I read the poem "A Box
of Crayons" to both classes and had a short discussion about accepting
others and being friends no matter what differences we may have. I
explained to students that we must accept one another despite our
differences. After this the Kindergarteners and their assigned "Book
Buddy" were given a grayon in which they decorated in order to describe
themselves. Each crayon was to be different and it showed the diversity
of the classroom, but also showed that they were all in the "crayon
box" or the world together and they should respect one another for
their differences. The students' crayons were then displayed outside in
a huge crayon box. This lesson shows my ability as a Student Enabler
because I was able to convery the importance of accepting all
differences, whether it be physical, emtional, or cultural to the
students. Thorugh this lesson, I felt that I created a classroom
environment that was comfortable for all students to learn because of
the respect and the acceptance that each one was given.
Reflection:
When
I think about this lesson, I must say that I feel as though I learned
from it, although I was teaching it to the students. I realized, when I
heard the comments students made and saw the crayon box when it was
complete, that it is extremely important to establish this comfort
level of acceptance and respect in each and every classroom. When I
have my own classroom, I will strive to create this type of environment.
Second Placement Evidence
Description and Rationale:
The evidence I chose to convey
myself as a Student Enabler from my sencond placement was from a Math
lesson I taught about creating number sentences. In this lesson I had
the students draw and write out number sentences to practice addition.
I believe that this lesson is strong in the area of Student Enabler
because through the students listening and saying their number
sentences aloud and drawing and writing out their number sentences, I
created a comfortable environment for visual, auditory, and hands-on
learners alike. I
have chosen two pieces of student work, one from and upper level
student and one from a lower level student, to show how the strategy
that I used worked in a positive manner.
Reflection:
When
I think about the simplicity
of this lesson, yet the strength that it shows for my emphasis put on
the differences between learners, I feel that I am a Student Enabler. I
feel that this lesson is a wonderful opportunity for all levels of
students and all types of learners to learn in an environment
comfortable for them. I realize the importance of being a Student
Enabler and through activities such as this, I will try to create
opportunities for all learners in my classroom.
