DISCLAIMER: This site is not connected with, authorized by, sponsored by, nor approved by the University of Alabama System or the University of Alabama in Huntsville in any way and makes no representations of any affiliation whatsoever with either.

These links are arranged by categories.  Any category with an entry reflecting the number of entries can be collapsed by left clicking on the category description and expanded by left clicking on that description again.

Clicking on a link under a category will take you to a table entry which restates the entry's name under the heading "Subject" and has a corresponding entry entitled "Document" on the right.  Under the Document heading will always be a link which you may left click on to go to the location.  In many cases, under that link will be a short description of what is available at that link.  Above the "Subject" entry will be an entry "Top" which returns you to the link from which you came.  It may also contain entries for "Next" and "Previous" which allow you to navigate through the table entries without returning the category listing.

All of the links and descriptions are on a single page.  While this makes the initial download take longer, it allows you to search all of the categories and descriptions for key words using your browser's Find function.  To make full use of this feature you must leave all categories expanded.  Internet Explorer uses Control/F or Edit|Find (On this Page) to find key words.

* Comprehensive guides: Two moderately lengthy guides with particular sections that readers may wish to consult as needs and interests suggest.

* Special topics: Covers many of the basic aspects of a chair’s work, such as hiring, reviewing, and terminating faculty (and staff), as well as the bane of many a chair’s existence—conflict management.

* Other legal issues: Special topics that are constrained by legal requirements and are the source of many legal conflicts in higher education.

Citizens are able to explore data, track events, find patterns, and build risk profiles, all in an effort to encourage and motivate action. We like to think of it as a Citizen’s Intelligence Agency, giving people similar tools and technologies to those held by their government.

Race-Neutral Approaches to Diversity http://www.ed.gov/offices/OCR/raceneutralreport.html

Race-Neutral Approaches to Diversity - Department of Education

This publication describes innovative “race-neutral” programs being implemented across the country. Educational institutions will find that there are dozens of race-neutral options available to them. They will also find that the early results from these programs are promising. Moreover, the initial positive results are only the beginning; the full advantages of many of the race-neutral alternatives described in this publication will not be fully felt until they are seriously implemented and several classes of students have been able to benefit from them.

This publication does not endorse any particular program discussed in these pages. Rather, our hope is to foster innovative thinking about using race-neutral means to produce diversity among educational institutions. The purpose of this publication is to help create a positive climate in which such race-neutral alternatives can be seriously considered.

ADA and other Codes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Signage in public areas of federal buildings is subject compliance with federal, state and local code requirements, requiring the use of certain symbols, messages and graphic standards (Fig. 1). To provide adequate signing for all users, including persons with disabilities, the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), first published in the Federal Register on July 26, 1991 describes specific requirements for the use of typestyles, minimum type sizes, message contrast, symbols, Braille characters, tactile messages, sign background gloss and sign placement. A summation of the ADA as it applies to signage can be found in the Society for Environmental Graphic Design “White Paper”, available through the SEGD, 401 F Street N. W., Suite 333, Washington, D.C. 20001. State and local sign codes vary considerably, such as symbol signs for toilet room doors required in California (Fig. 2). To determine sign requirements for state and local codes, contact a design professional or your local sign contractor.

Copyright Issues in Digital Media

From the Congressional Budget Office, August 2004

This Congressional Budget Office (CBO) paper reviews current copyright law in the United States and considers the unique aspects of digital technology's challenge to that law. It also examines the prospects for a market-based resolution to copyright disputes over digital content and explores the effect of potential revisions to copyright law on economic efficiency and equity. While this analysis suggests some issues and concerns that the Congress may wish to consider during its deliberations about any changes in copyright law, in keeping with CBO's mandate to provide objective, impartial analysis, the paper makes no policy recommendations.

Ownership of Electronic Course Materials in Higher Education

by Dan L. Burk

The introduction of sophisticated information technology to higher education is now forcing faculty and administrators to reexamine the traditional allocations of ownership interests in course materials. This article has been prepared to alert educators and administrators in higher educational institutions to the issues surrounding ownership of electronic course materials. In particular, this article focuses on the allocation of copyright ownership in electronic course materials between faculty and their sponsoring institutions. The article reviews relevant copyright basics, the work-made-for-hire doctrine, and options for contractual allocations of copyrights. The discussion includes a series of criteria that should be considered in formulating an institution's intellectual property policy.
